THE VANISHING
STILL LIFES ARE FAILING
GSL
San Francsico trio VANISHING are back with their 2nd album, the follow-up to 2003's epic "Songs for Psychotic Children." Recorded off-the-beaten-path at Moss Beach's Tsunami Studio, "Still Lifes Are Failing" finds the group getting beyond the "standard" retro-inspired sound of their debut album, exploring darker and far more dynamic territory. Singer and former SUBTONIX saxist Jesse EVA has essentially abandoned the bass guitar in favor of her old horn and the results are downright spine-tingling. Often compared to groups such as SISTERS OF MERCY,TUXEDO MOON, and THE BIRTHDAY PARTY (but with a decidely more dance/electronic feel), VANISHING have developed a unique and recognizable sound and image within the confines of contemporary "post-punk" and alt-dance music. Unlike most of their contemporaries, however, they inject an unmistakeable degree of sexual politics and actual thought into what they are doing - and saying. VANISHING are a punk band in spirit and increasingly difficult to categorize in terms of sound.

DARKEST HOUR
DELIVER US
Victory Records
Immeasurable talent and intoxicating fun. They take the stage with a mix of complete grace and total abandonment to create some of the most technically adept and magnetically challenging heavy metal ever. Their dedication to putting on some of the most intense live performances ever is matched by their astonishing skill that only gets better with each record. Deliver Us, DARKEST HOUR’s newest effort, sets yet another higher standard for themselves, as well as for the entire metal community. Each track on this record comprises not only some of the band’s most musically ambitious work, but is also their most personal collection of songs to date. Nothing speaks louder than the words of singer John Henry on the title track… “this world is dying everyday don’t let it come between us, our fate has traveled this far and now the storm, brings us faster to a close, brimming with pathetic prose... don’t leave me, give me release don’t sink down into defeat, only when you’re through fleeing can you save yourself deliver us.”

DEADLINE
08 / 02 / 82
Dischord Records
Deadline was an early DC hardcore band that unfortunately broke up soon after they recorded these blistering punk songs. 25 years after the recording, this CD comprises all their material (11 songs clocking in at 11 minutes!) and features full re-mastering and a three panel sleeve modeled after the original LP manila envelope packaging. Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Rites of Spring) plays drums on this recording.

BLOC PARTY
A WEEKEND IN THE CITY
Vice
The follow-up to their smash debut, "Silent Alarm", is every bit as bright, powerful, and catchy, with the addition of more muscle, attitude, depth, and a bit of polish courtesy of their producer, Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol). Inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls "the living noise of a metropolis", this record captures every detail of daily life in a modern city from the ebullient to the mundane. From the quiet desolation of commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday night to the long ride home early in the morning, these are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our every day.

DANIEL HIGGS
MAGIC ALPHABET
Northern Liberties
Daniel Higgs is the lyrical frontman of Lungfish, the poet behind the “Book of Antennae” and “Doomsday Bonnets,” the solo electronic artist, Cone of Light and the visionary tattoo artist of international renown. Here Daniel presents 17 instrumental Jews harp improvisations recorded in 2003 by Chad Clark at Silver Sonya. These improvisations are spare and hypnotic, some with sparse beats, most naked and self apparent. This is not pop music by any stretch of the imagination, it’s an invitation to meditate on the simplicity and range of a single organic instrument.

THE PEEPSHOWS
SURRENDER MY LOVE
Stereodrive! Records
Sweden’s masters of sophisticated ROCK return with three new blasts for 2002! Their last album "Today we kill … tomorrow we die” has gotten great reviews all over the place and we are proud to present one of the greatest songs off of this album. In addition, the B-side contains 2 never released originals which should finally push The Peepshows beyond mere comparisons to Turbonegro et. al.

TEAR IT UP
TAKING YOU DOWN WITH ME
Havoc records
From the ashes of Dead Nation comes Tear It Up. I believe that the twelve tracks from this 12" were recorded before the tracks on the Tear It Up 7". This stuff is quite good, with lots of anger, energy, and speed, all of which is built on a foundation of solid hardcore song writing and the occassional inclusion of a catchy melody. Damn good.

DIVISION OF LAURA LEE
97 - 99
Lovitt Records
This CD is a look back at the formative years of one of the more intriguing bands on the present soundscape. 97-99 is a testament to how fluidly the quartet moved from the driving, DC-influenced mid-tempo rock on the album to the pulsing garage rock of their newer material on Epitaph Records.

THE UNIT AMA
S/T
Gringo Records
They delivered their self-titled album with no fuss or fanfare and slipped back to the North East. The Unit Ama make music that explodes outward: dense but soothing metronomic pulses morph into a wild fracturing of the traditional rock trio, taking the possibilities of what can be done with guitar, bass, drums and vocals into the stratosphere. Whereas others have sought to push the limits of rock music by intense complication and trickery, The Unit Ama's approach is natural, human, shamanic even. In addition to appearances on a number of compilations, The Unit Ama's songs have found a life of their own through the band's self-released Variations series. This is not anthemic, easy listening, but something far more challenging and ultimately, rewarding. Members of The Unit Ama have played in bands such as Crane, Kodiak and Month of Birthdays.

THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY
IT TAKES A NATION OF ASSHOLES TO HOLD US BACK
X-mist
The 2nd complete full-length album by this awesome band from Cleveland/Ohio ¯ featuring 14 songs recorded by STEVE ALBINI at Electric Audio Studio in Chicago! Released exclusively worldwide on VINYL via X-MIST RECORDS (CD released on COLD SWEAT RECORDS in the USA)! THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY includes ex-members of NEON KING KONG, CHARGERS STREET GANG and BASSHOLES ¯ and the band has previously released records on labels like EXIT STENCIL RECORDINGS, VERSION CITY, and GOLD STANDARD LABORATORIES!!! For those unfamiliar, THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY are a welcome addition to the legendary musical lineage of their home state of Ohio (PAGANS, DEVO, DEAD BOYS, ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS), filling a void in the sound and subject matter sorely missed in contemporary culture. Sonically traversing territories blazed by BAD BRAINS, the MONORCHID, LE SHOK or PERE UBU, while lyrically challenging social and political norms with the wit and insight of such greats as BLACK FLAG or PUBLIC ENEMY. This LP comes with very special artwork, including a printed innersleeve, and a peel-off sticker on the cover (just like back then Andy Warthol’s banana on the legendary first VELVET UNDERGROUND LP...)

VAGUE ANGELS
TRUTH LOVED
Expect Candy
Indie bad-boy? Literary minstrel? The mythology has many permutations ¯ decide for yourself. Vague Angels is Chris Leo’s current moniker. Fans of Chris Leo’s former projects (The Lapse, Van Pelt, Native Nod) will recognize his distinct blend of verbosity and musical virtuosity on his new efforts. With strange lyrical narratives and dense arrangements, Vague Angels sound like the culmination of a style and sound that he’s been developing for years. Though Chris dropped off the public radar for nearly five years after Southern's release of The Lapse's "Heaven Ain't Happenin' " LP in 2000, contrary to popular belief, he was not sitting idly by the jacuzzi with the gross of Crystal and ho's he'd accumulated from left over touring booty. In fact, he was busy working on novels and albums in tandem in the secrecy of Bolivia and Newark, New Jersey. The first novel, "White Pigeons", was originally released along with the album "Truth Loved" serving as Chapter 7 and performed by the book's fictitious band The Breaks, as played by Vague Angels. Seeing as all people see the same things differently and all things appear differently when seen at differing distances, the album "Truth Loved" is finally set free to be released on its own as its own. Rather than exist as a musical substory surrounded by a novel, perhaps some will feel it better suited as the premier story with the novel serving as rancid residue around it. Yes, after two stripped down European and Statewide tours with little but himself and an acoustic guitar, Chris has decided to allow the songs of "Truth Loved" some breathing room from the text and stretch out as wide as they may choose to stretch.

MASERATI
INVENTIONS FOR THE NEW SEASON
Temporary Residence
Much has changed in the four years since Maserati's last release. In that time, the band's sound has evolved so significantly that only shades of the reverb and delay-drenched guitars resemble their previous output. The rhythm section has been overhauled, with Gerhardt Fuchs (!!!, Turing Machine...) replacing Phil Horan on drums. The result is Inventions For The New Season, a bloodshot, 3AM soundtrack to a Michael Mann movie that hasn't happened yet; a sweaty, delirious mix of mid-to-late 70s Pink Floyd, German psych-rock, Krautrock, and mid-80s action film scores. Produced by longtime friend Andy Baker in his Athens, GA home studio. Inventions drags the glory years of psychedelic arena rock kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with the pomposity (and vocals) carefully removed.

BELLINI
SNOWING SUN
Monitor
Constructed from the finest ingredients of UZEDA and Don Caballero, comes a band that play honestly and brilliantly and destroy everyone in their path. A band that sonically blast everyone off the stage. A band that have songs that pummel like the blast from Thor's Hammer. A band that make you realize you should pawn your guitar and pick up a pair of headphones. Bellini is this band. Bellini is this good. On their debut record, Snowing Sun, Bellini have created an amazing chunk of rock'n'roll for those prepared. Recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, the album has a heavy sound, sometimes hard, sometimes slow, always aggressive.

SABERTOOTH TIGER
EXTINCTION
GSL
L.A. trio Sabertooth.Tiger's debut album, "Extinction Is Inevitable," is a pedal-to-the-metal blast of pissed-off hardcore punk. Elements of sounds popularized in places like San Diego and Portland bubble under the surface, forming a motley brew of ferocious energy. Comparisons to Drive Like Jehu, Tragedy, and Bullet Union aside, Sabertooth.Tiger weld powerful sonic dynamics with equally forceful ideas on topics such as autonomy, economics, patriotism, consumerism, and the like.

WHEN TIGERS FIGHT
GHOST STORY
Indecision Records
Although the idea originated sometime in the Summer of 2003, it wasn't until last year that the band really started to take shape. The brainchild of Jarrod Alexander (The Suicide File) and Jonathan Dennison (The Promise), When Tigers Fight is simply hardcore in it's most pure and uncomprised form. Without allegiance to any one scene or stodgy point of view, the band has been free to create without regard to any past formula or pre-conceived expectation. "Ghost Story" is the first collaboration with guitarist Ken Olden who, along with vocalist Mike McTernan, was a driving member of Washington D.C.'s Damnation A.D. The great chemistry among this new line-up is evident and seems to resonante throughout every track on this album. The best way to describe this record is that it is truly the sum of all it's parts. Being able to draw comparison with any of the members former endeavors all at the same time without being a re-hash or imitation of any of them. The band originally started as a bi-coastal side project but has since changed it's gears dramatically.
